When was the LEZ introduced?
The LEZ is officially established since 01/01/2018. The LEZ applies every day of the week, 24/7.
A transition period - during which only warnings will be sent - is planned, to allow residents and visitors/commuters to adapt to the new system. After this, failure to comply with the access criteria will result in a fine (see enforcement).
In 2018, the transition period will last 9 months. This means that only as from October 2018, the non-respect of the access criteria will result in a fine (see enforcement).
Only the oldest diesel vehicles will be affected in 2018, the first year of application (see table): the access criteria will change over time so gradually more vehicles will be affected by the LEZ.
The transition period for the years 2019 and 2020 will last 3 months. These transition periods will only apply to the vehicles affected by the new criteria.
